The Story of My Sister’s Sweater
February 22, 2008 by Cass
It started with my sister flipping through a knitting magazine at my house last summer, and saying, quite casually, “Oh I love this sweater!” while she held it up about 2 inches from my face, and then flipping on.
If you’re a sister, you know that what she really means is something along the lines of “You’re a complete bitch if you don’t make this sweater for me, and I’ll remind you of it every time we talk for the rest of your life.”
Then I went to my LYS that week and saw this:
The very same sweater, designed by the owner of my LYS and featured in Creative Knitting magazine- where my sister saw it. Sweet.
That led to this:
And after much heartache on my part (too many stitches on too short needles) I eventually got to this:
That’s a sleeve, and the beginning of the neck.
I finally admitted defeat sometime around September. I can’t have 200 stitches on my straight needles. So my sister’s sweater got tossed into the abyss that is my closet. That Katia yarn must have been bored, or drunk, or something because it got all tangled and messy- surely not from my constant pawing through my stash in search of goodies.
Which brings us up to today. I finally found the perfect pattern for this yarn, and for my sister’s bod. I jumped through many hoops on Ravelry to find someone who had the pattern booklet. And it came in the mail today.
So this morning I had yarn vomit all over my table.

And - PRESTO CHANGO - after several hours of detangling, I have a whole new project.

The pattern is from Stacey Charles, and I think the yarn will suit it perfectly.

And look, the yarn is so purty, it can hyp-ah-tize you. Look deeeep into the yarn…

I feel so good, it’s like I’m recycling. Only not.
So onto the needles jumps another project. My sober attention span is shorter than a homeschooled teenager on crack. But I’m excited to finally get this damn thing done. Besides, I can wear it too, right?
That’s a great pattern you’re going to make!
Wow! Your sister is going to love it. Well, if she doesn’t, then you can just pass it on to me. The pattern is great and that yarn is to die for! Hope the pattern behaves this time!
I must admit I like the second sweater(cardigan) better. Love the colors of the yarn too, so bright and cheery.
I think the yarn and the sweater are a perfect match!
Mmmmm… that yarn… I must munch it.
Awesome. I made my Cherry Bomb Tank out of the same stuff. (Of course, I used the cool colorway I can’t seem to find at any other store since.)
Kismet!
Second choice is fresh and fab.
Love it! I’m so glad you’ve found a pattern that will work. I too like the cardigan better than the original…
perfect match! and actually a cuter sweater than the original your sister was looking at. Pretty yarn vomit cass!
Oh that’s going to be so cute! Great use of vomit
eww.
the second looks like a way better choice… more flattering… and the yarn… purty!!
I like the second pattern better!
I agree with everyone else who likes the second pattern better. you know you could come up with a real winner if you invented telescoping straights that could increase in size as you need them the join couldn’t be any worse then the join on a circular
I have 5 projects on the needles at the moment so I understand about attention span
2 different shawls of the same Mystery Pattern
wool peddlars
clapotis
and a baby blanket!!!
Go have fun!!!!
I think I’ve missed something along the way. Why the aversion to circular needles? Are you a straights only kinda gal?
I like the second pattern better! I think your sister will do too. And your sanity and straight needles will appreciate it too
I was wondering about that too - why not use circs? But I do like the second pattern better!
Ooh! Pretty second pattern indeed!
I really like both patterns and LOVE the colours in the yarn! Hey, if your sister doesn’t appreciate your efforts, you know that I do… just email me for my measurements and address
Val

I LOVE the 2nd sweater! What a color design and it will look FABULOUS! with those colors you are using!
In case you havent heard it enough, I like the second sweater better too!
