It Must Be Done
March 29, 2008 by Cass
I’m going to challenge myself. Not something I tend to do on a regular basis; I’m perfectly comfortable with my kooky self and don’t often feel the need to improve. But lately I’ve been eyeing my unfinished projects and feeling a bit… flaky. Not that flaky is new to me or necessarily a bad thing- flakiness is one of my trademark personality traits. It’s just that, I’m not following through and finishing much of anything these days.
I’m too fickle and scatterbrained. I get all hot and bothered about a project and then I peak too soon and get distracted by something else and I never come back to finish. I have no trouble with the small projects, it’s the bigguns I seem to lose interest in.
And so, a challenge. I’ve not purchased any new yarn since I bought Seduce for the Flow tank. And I’m not gonna. No new yarn for me. (le sigh) Not until I finish at least 3 large projects that I have sitting on needles.
#1- my sister’s Sideways Knit Cardigan.

I have started this sweater 3 different times in the past year, and never finished it. I’ve got to rip back to fix the crazy decreases, and I’ve got half of one sleeve knitted. Surely I can finish the damn thing.
#2- Karen’s Tree of Life pillow.

This is actually off the needles, but still needs to be sewn into a pillow. So it’s really a matter of getting off my lazy ass to set up the sewing machine and put it together. Her birthday has come and gone and yet here it sits, on my desk, languishing and sort of mocking me. Props to Karen for waiting patiently.
#3- Flow.

I’ve actually knitted several more inches since that photo. But it’s still unfinished. With warm weather approaching, I might actually get to wear the damn thing if I finish it. And I did pay an ungodly sum for that yarn.
I will not even consider purchasing any yarn or any knitting accessories until I finish all three of these projects. And I will start no other projects until these are finished. (gasp) There. I’ve said it. Out loud and in public. I want you all to hold me to this. Spank me if I buy any yarn, m’kay?
I’m self-aware enough to admit that might not be enough to make me follow through. I have enough yarn stashed here to last the next 10 knitting years. So I need a little carrot at the end of my stick.
When I finish all 3 projects, I’m going to bribe reward myself with a trip to Purl’s Yarn Emporium in Asheville. Have a little big celebration. I’ll take Casey, and we’ll go mad. We’ll have large yarn shopping fun. That will be more likely to light a fire under my ass.
And so it’s on.
le sigh
Watch me go. (insert rolling eyes here)
YOU can do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I will cheer you on even if the pillow isn’t for me :o( Lucky Karen
Can Cass Do IT ???? Yes SHe Can!!!!!!
I mean when you have that kind of carrot dangling in your face, I’d knit all night to get to it .
Mmm…Main Street in Asheville has some tasty beer. That alone is a reward. Screw the yarn.
You can do it!!! I am doing thing same thing… kind of. I’m not to buy new yarn OR start any more projects until I cast off the pair of sock I have on my needles OR my Clappee… It’s going well so far though!
I’ll be here to support you!
Dayum. Stronger will than I. And this is said while looking to my left at the unfinished baby blanket for neighbor (baby came home last week), to the right at two pairs of socks on needle, and while being guiltily aware of the project lurking in the car.
But I’m on a yarn diet, so that counts as discipline, right?
A good spanking, huh? Might sound like fun depending on who is doing the spank.
Good luck with the FOs. I feel like I’m kind of in the same boat. I’d love to finish off a few UFOs around here and make them useful instead of dust collectors. But then again, where would my dust go?
Give me a C
Give me an A
Give me an S
Give me another S
What’s that Spell?
CASS
GO CASS GO!!!!
Just your little PA cheerleader here!
HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA….
Oh, whoops, was I supposed to be encouraging here?
Er, um, you can do it!
HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA!
How is spanking you punishment if you like it? I say we take away the vodka if you buy yarn. hehehe
Now you’re making me feel guilty. I’ve been doing the same thing (except I’m forcing a complete UFO banishing, and a clearing of the queue before yarn shopping can commence)… but I’ve been thinking hard about cheating. I’ll stay strong if you do.
Good job! I challenged myself too because I just kept buying yarn and patterns but never starting them because I’d find another thing I wanted to knit and now I have a huge pile of yarn and patterns and nothing is done.
The loop hole I found though is that though you can’t buy yarn for yourself you can still get your fiber fix by buying yarn for others. I’ve been buying yarn to teach people to knit too much lately. Really I just need the thrill of buying a new yarn and the feeling of working with it. So what if I don’t get to take the FO home I still got to play with new yarn!
I just had to laugh because the other gals on here know you so well. Cass, spanking is not a punishment if you LIKE it! Just WHO do you think you’re fooling, girlfriend?
As for the restraint of not buying any more yarn, I’m there for you (somewhere in the back of my mind there’s a little cheering squad, or maybe just voices). You are, however, that you’re going to have to prove to us that you’ve obstained…
Val
I apologize for my spelling, above. Abstained, not obstained… (insert embarrassed smiley face here)
You can do it! (Says me. Also flaky.)
Sorry but I was never a cheerleader! I was the one who requested a hall pass to go to the bathroom, went all the way to Charburger’s, and then brought my fries back to class with me.
So when you are looking for someone to be bad with - I’m there!
you can so do it! every now and then i have to put a challenge similar to yours on myself…if the stash flows out of the closet hubby will see it…so must knit a few projects intended yarn was purchased for, lol! Chill the vodka, cass is getting ready to knit!
I’ve never been to the Yarn Emporium - Can you tell me some more about it? I don’t know if you’ve ever been to the two yarn stores in Knoxville, but if you have, how does it compare to them? Is it worth a 2 hour drive?
Good for you. *IF* I give in a buy a wheel, that will kill my fiber budget for a long, long time…
Word of encouragement here: I just finished a project that was a fairly large one for me, proof that it CAN be done. So you go girl… I want to hear those needles clicking… smell some wood burning… see pics of those FOs :oD
Good luck to ya!
I’ve managed to stick to the “no buying new yarn (or fabric) till your stash is gone” rule for years now….my mom keeps giving me new half finished projects…so I’ve stayed busy, also, we don’t have a really good LYS so I’m not tempted….save for knitpicks….but anyway…I gave away a shopping back of nasty acrylic “junk” to the local daycare today….that shrunk my stash considerably. I’m still waiting, ever so patiently, for the day when I can learn the whole knitting lace thing…..and buy something silky and pretty and fair…..*sigh*
You sound exactly like me…I have this problem too…I have three or four big projects in various states of completion, but they just languish while I do this or that… so I’m also on a “‘no buying yarn til I’m finished at least one of them” strike, but I know it’s hard, there’s just too many nice things to knit…hang in there, I know you’ll make your goal!!
I know how you feel! I refuse to put another project on the needles until I finish my wrap!! Not to mention I have about 20 more UFOs hiding around the house! LOL
