Dear Universe, Please Give Me a Break
May 6, 2008 by Cass
Go figure, I found my knitting groove, and then lost my time to knit. Ain’t that just the way?
If you’re a hard core sock knitter, you might want to look away. I’m about to show you what it looks like when you pick the wrong yarn for the project, and then it pools in a big way.

This lacy pattern would be much better suited to a solid color yarn, and I knew that going into it. But my mom is not exactly a “solid sock color” kinda gal.

Instead of striping or nice variegated color strands, I’ve got pools of color that look like they’re gonna twist vertically on the leg of the sock. No telling what the foot will do. It could get really wacky. You militant sock knitters are probably breaking out in hives right about now.
But I like it. Call me crazy (everyone does), but I really like the kooky color moving around the sock. And my mom is just artsy (and crazy) enough to like it too. And -BONUS- mom likes short socks, so I’m still operating under the delusion that I can finish at least one sock by Sunday.
And oh, oh oh oh, man. I should have bought more of the Skinny Organic Cotton. People, seriously, this stuff is a big yarn O.

Would it be too weird to knit bed sheets? And underwear? And PJs?
I usually just read and lurk in my own little world, but I have to tell you I like how the yarn is pooling too and I LOVE the colorway. I’m off to order some and return to my nice fibery world of lurkdom
P.S. I love your blog too…..
Wick moves in the same way, and I like it. What I dislike are the rather random, large pools that have happened to me a couple of times.
I still haven’t tried the Blue Sky cotton I bought last fall. Maybe I’ll get to that before the summer’s over…
I totally have a sock that is kind of doing the same thing, but i love it! I’ll post a picture of it on my blog eventually, but really, I like your sock. I’m sure your mom will love it!!
I have a great quick sock pattern next time you need one. Its one from my LYS and I started knitting it on Sunday and I am have done with the first sock. Let me know if you are ever interested in it! And I think I might have to try that new Blue Sky skinny! That shade is just a perfect color of red! Happy Knitting!
The pooling doesn’t bother me at all. It kind of reminds me of a Marbling. The blue sky’s organic cotton is scrumptious! I just finished a lace cardigan with their organic dyed. Love it!!
I think it’s fun.
i think knitted bedsheets would be heavenly (if not insanely boring while knitting!)
Great colors! Your mom will probably like it.
Normally I don’t like pooling, but I’ve never had it do those cool vertical stripes! I usually just get a huge blob of color that looks like I spilled something on my sock!
I think the socks are great. Most people love anything that has been hand knit by someone that loves them.
I’m also doing a ’short’ pair of socks for my mom for Sunday. I found the best pattern on ravelry. I finished the first sock in two days and I’m almost done with the second one. It’s called the Lacy Mock Cable, or something like that (should’ve had my pattern right here with me). I have the first one half done pictured in my projects on ravelry (my id there is knitnurd). I’m going to have to do a pair like yours for my mom now that I’ve seen that pattern! I love how the colors are working up for you and I’m sure your mom will love her new socks!
So long as you like it and enjoy knitting the socks… and hopefully she likes them to!
I like the sock! Go ahead and knit the sheets if you want to, but that would be one expensive project! Maybe the pjs…….
You know, if the yarn had just pooled vertically without twisting, it would have been a very cool effect: vertical stripes of cables and ribs.
I agree with you. 99% of the time, I just let yarn pool as it will. If you wanted that much control, you should have just knit stripes.
Yeesh. I am a hardcore sock knitter and I should have heeded your advice.
I’m glad you love it! And I hope your mom does too! But I just gotta tell ya, that if that was me, I’d be donating the yarn to another project. Too much for a hardcore sockie like me.
Do people refer to themselves as sockies? Probably not….
I just blogged about my bad week so I know how you feel when things arent going right.Remember there is always next week and things could go really right;)Hugs Darcy
Hey, quick question: did you use a tripod on that photo of the pansy and yarn? It’s so beautifully sharp. I’ve tried, but I haven’t used a tripod yet.
