For now they are available at Shut Up, I’m Writing Patterns, but I’m working on moving them here to this page. The Chicken Tam is available below.

Chicken Tam
(Ravelry Project Page here)

This is a slouchy tam with a lace pattern and wheel shaped crown. I knitted mine in a self striping yarn, but I think the lace would look much better with a solid yarn. Please note that I am not a designer, I’m just a knitter who likes to create. I’ve made every attempt at accuracy here, but my mind tends to wander and my notes tend to be illegible. Please let me know if you have any problems with the pattern.

Materials:
-2 skeins Berroco Love It yarn, I used Lucy In the Sky colorway. The tam only used 1.5 skeins, which is approx. 180 yards. This yarn is 58% Cotton, 38% Acrylic, 4% Polyester, which makes it very light and springy. It reminds me a bit of Rowan Calmer.
-set of size 8 DPN needles
-6 stitch markers, tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Notes: I like my hats rather loose around the brim, so I’ve made a large size here. I have only knitted this one size, but I’ve done the math for a smaller (tighter around the brim) hat as well.
Gauge: 18 and 22 rows = 4” in st st (row gauge not terribly important)
Size: Large 17” brim, (Smaller 16” brim)
Abbreviations:
k - knit
p - purl
k2tog - knit 2 together
ssk - slip, slip, knit
m1- make one: with your right needle from the back of your work, pick up the strand between the last stitch knitted and the next stitch. Place on left needle and knit by working the back loop of the stitch.
pm - place marker
dpn - double pointed needles
Directions:
CO 80 (72) sts, divide stitches evenly onto 3 or 4 DPN. Place marker (m), join to knit in the round.
Work K1, P1 rib for 1 inch.
Increase Round: *K2, M1; rep from *. You will have 120 (108 ) sts
Next round: Knit all (For smaller size only: M1 2 more times somewhere in this round, giving you a total of 110 sts on your needles)
Begin lace pattern: (pattern worked over 10 sts and 12 rows)
Row 1: knit all
Row 2: *K2tog, (k1, yo) twice, K1, ssk, K3; rep from * to end of round
Row 3: knit all
Row 4: *K2tog, K1, yo, K3, yo, K1, ssk, K1; rep from * to end of round
Row 5: knit all
Row 6: *K1, yo, K5, yo, K1, sl 1-k2tog-psso; rep from * to end of round
Row 7: knit all
Row 8: *yo, K1, ssk, K3, K2tog, K1, yo, K1; rep from * to end of round
Row 9: knit all
Row 10: *yo, K1, ssk, K1, K2tog, K1, yo, K3; rep from * to end of round
Row 11: knit all
Row 12: *yo, K1, sl 1-K2tog-psso, K1, yo, K5; rep from * to end of round
Repeat rows 1-12 one time more.
Next row, place markers for decreases:
Large size only: knit this row, placing markers every 20 stitches, total of 6 markers and 120 sts.
Small size only: (K17, K2tog, PM) twice, then Knit rest of row, placing markers every 18 sts, total of 6 markers and 108 sts.
Begin crown decreases:
Row 1: *K2tog, yo, work to 2 sts before m, ssk, sl m; rep from * to end of round
Row 2: knit all
Repeat until there remain 12 sts.
Next row: *K2tog; rep from * to end of round, 6 sts remain
Cut yarn, leaving a 8” tail. Thread tail through remaining sts, pull tight, and fasten to inside. Weave in all ends. Now quick, plop your tam on your head, take a picture, and send it to me at Petsittt (at) aol (dot) com!

Hi Cass,
I have been trying to get in contact with you about your sea turtle pattern. My niece has taken a position at an environmental learning center on our beach, EELS. I wanted to ask permission to use your pattern to create some kits to sell in the gift shop. I could not get into the pattern section without an invitation. I will not continue if you don’t want to share the pattern for this cause. Just let me know.
thanks, Tina (tepee on Ravelry)
